Jesus, Aguero Score As Man City Ease Past West Ham
Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero were both on target as Manchester City rounded off their preseason with a comfortable 3-0 victory over West Ham.
The strikers both started and scored their first goals of preseason — with Raheem Sterling adding a third — as City made it three successive wins ahead of next Saturday’s Premier League opener at newly-promoted Brighton.
West Ham will kick of their own season in Manchester a day later against Manchester United and Slaven Bilic will need a big response from his side after they were dominated for 90 minutes.
It took just eight minutes for City to take the lead when they pressed Angelo Ogbonna into a loose pass deep inside his own half. Danilo, who started at right wing-back ahead of Kyle Walker, picked up the loose ball and gave it to Kevin De Bruyne, whose whipped low cross was turned in at the back post by Gabriel.
On-loan West Ham goalkeeper Joe Hart, who was starting against his parent club for the first time, had no chance but he kept his new team in the game in a one-sided first half.
The England international made a smart save to deny former teammate Aguero after a neat pass from David Silva and was then out quickly to stop a half-chance for Danilo.
Ex-City defender Pablo Zabaleta was also facing his old teammates for the first time since he left the club on a free transfer in the summer after nine years at the Etihad Stadium.
He had his hands full with winger Leroy Sane and could not prevent the Germany international getting past him just before half-time and firing a fierce low shot narrowly wide.
The second finally came 10 minutes into the second half when another fast sweeping move ended with Aguero turning in Silva’s low cross.
It prompted Pep Guardiola to make seven changes with £47 million new signing Bernardo Silva getting his first action after being given extra time off after playing at the Confederations Cup with Portugal.
But the bombardment continued and City added a third when Sterling volleyed in Phil Foden’s deflected shot and he could have had a second shortly after with a header that Hart clawed away.
West Ham barely threatened with City’s £37.4 million new keeper Ederson a virtual bystander — his only save, at the start of the second half, was a comfortable gather from Edimilson Fernandes’ weak shot.
