How I feel about…being a fashion designer
BY EDESI ANANI,
32I have a PGD in Business Administration but somewhere along the line, branched into fashion designing. Actually, the flair for fashion has always been part of me. So in order to perfect the skill and raw talent, I went to Sahara Fashion School in Kaduna. Then I also have a fashion designer who comes all the way from Lagos to take me through private fashion lessons because it is something I am passionate about and have to build on.
Fashion recently is the in thing, it gives you the leverage to express yourself. Like the saying goes “you will be addressed by the way you are dressed,” so everyone tries to be as fashionable as possible.
What motivated me to go into fashion is my love for beautiful things; I try to make people look beautiful and confident in their own skin. For example, I am big boned so I always wanted to make things that will make me look good, sexy and beautiful at the same time even though I am plus sized.
I feel great being a fashion designer; it is the best thing that has ever happened to me. It brings out the creativity in me. You could just look at somebody and know “I have to make this dress this way to get a perfect fit for this person’s body type.” Sometimes you see people wearing clothes they don’t look good in or suggesting a style that will not fit them at all, but as a fashion designer, I am able to suggest better options that will fit them and the result is always amazing. So that alone gives me the satisfaction.
