From: BillyGraham Abel, Yola
Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Boboye Oyeyemi, said the construction of over 235 roads within two years by Governor Jibrilla Bindow of Adamawa State of Nigeria, was a remarkable contribution to road safety which had significantly reduced carnage on roads and boost road safety in the state.
Boboye made the remark, on Monday, during the investiture of Governor Jibrilla as ‘Special Marshal’ in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.
Boboye said an effective synergy between government at all levels and the corps was critical to curbing fatal crashes on Nigerian roads.
He commended Governor Bindow’s commitment to road safety issue by the construction of roads which had enhanced the quality of life of road users in the state. He described Jibrilla’s outstanding road projects as an act that should be emulated by other governments in the country towards protecting Nigerians from avoidable road mishap.
Boboye said the government of president Muhammadu Buhari has placed road safety issue at the highest level of government affairs.
Noting that the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, is the chairman of National Road Safety Advisory Council with governors and chairpersons of local governments in the country as members of council which means the Nigerian government is taking the lead in protecting the life of every road user in the country.
Oyeyemi said, “This will lead to improved funding, accelerated policy pronouncements and the strengthening of regulatory powers of the corps.
“Sixteen states in Nigeria have already constituted State Road Safety Management Board to work with the FRSC towards securing the lives and property of the Nigerian people.
“Nigeria has about 204 thousand kilometers of road network and all the roads cannot be manned by the corp alone, so it has become imperative for partnership and shared responsibility between the corps and state government in order to push forward the its agenda of reducing fatalities on Nigerian roads.
The corp Marshal pointed out that”Nigeria is ranked the second in the continent in matters of road safety. Nigeria’s document on road safety will be reviewed during the next UN decade for Road Safety from 2011-2020 meeting.
“The policies implemented by the Buhari-led government which ensures active involvement of government in road safety issues Nigeria will soon be ranked the best in road safety issue in the continent.”
