Anti-Party Activities: Abia APC Chieftain, Ikonne, Fingers Kalu
By ANDREW ESSIEN, Abuja
A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Abia state, Prince Paul Ikonne has alleged that former governor of the state, Orji Uzor Kalu, is “hob-nobbing” with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Ikonne further said the former governor’s action is capable of tearing the party into pieces in the state which has been “getting bigger”, adding that it is wrong for Kalu to be in the APC and at the same time “pallying” with a sitting governor in the PDP.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Friday, Ikonne alleged that Kalu is working to make a brother of his a deputy governor of the state on the platform of the PDP and another a member of the house of representatives.
He said: “Abia APC is getting bigger, you will recall that when some people said that they have joined the party, I raised serious concerns because of the antecedents of such individuals, especially the former governor of Abia state, chief Orji Uzor Kalu,” Ikonne said.
“Those things I predicted have started playing out and that we will not take, it has come to our notice that what he is scheming, trying to hob-nob or hob-nobbing with the present governor, Dr Ikpeazu, governor of Abia state, in the bid to get his brother to run with the governor Ikpeazu as his running mate in 2019 who is a PDP person.
“Then another of his brother to run for federal house in Aba federal constituency. This is an evil plan against Abia, it is devilish and its an act that I know Abians will resist and APC members will also resist it because this kind of action is capable of tearing the party apart.
“Right now we are building our party, APC is getting stronger in Abia, more people are joining the party, more sincere and focused people are joining the party.
“For chief Orji Uzor Kalu to have started this his game, it is too bad. I condemn it in all totality. He cannot be in APC and at the same time pallying with the sitting governor for his brother to run with him in 2019. Under what platform is this arrangement going to take place because the governor has not joined APC yet, Orji Kalu is one leg in PDP and one leg in APC. These are questions begging for answers and I know Abians won’t take this kind of game again.
“He should concentrate his effort in his Abia north zone and try and win his senatorial seat, instead of trying to plant his brother to run for Aba federal constituency and one to run as deputy governor with the serving governor.
“He cannot impose any candidate on Abia APC, he should know that he is unpopular and this kind of idea cannot fly. It is an unpopular idea, it is an evil plan against Abians which by the grace of God will not work out. I use this opportunity to call on chief Orji Uzor Kalu to desist from acts that are capable of tearing the party apart, acts scaring people from joining the party, act capable of making APC lose elections in 2019. This can scare electorates and they will think the ‘Orjism’ is back again and APC is not a platform for that.”
Commenting on the statement of former vice-president Atiku Abubakar who said APC “is a bullying party”, he said does not see the party as one.
“Totally I don’t subscribe to that APC is a bullying party, I don’t know the angle the person is coming from and I don’t know what informed his opinion. From my opinion and where I stand, from my state I don’t see the party – don’t know the action that informed the person’s opinion,” he said.
